en route to the senior
op die fiets
The social senior bike against loneliness. Getting back into the neighbourhood together with entrepreneurs and local residents.
The project, consisting of an electric fatbike, sidecar and occupants, can be encountered in Utrecht Zuidwest. The bike is driven by volunteers, local residents who know their way around. During the trip the participants can enjoy a cup of coffee, a good conversation, or a leisurely lounge.
The bike is outfitted especially for that moment of relaxation, as the sidecar converts into a bench for two in no time, complete with cushions for comfortable seating.
The bike offers an accessible way to get out and move around the neighbourhood on your own. Both senior and volunteer can explore the neighbourhood together, supported, as needed, by a map of area highlights.
Project 'op die fiets' is currently in a one-year pilot, on its way to further steps and wider deployment of the project. During the project we cooperate with AxionContinu, Vecht & IJssel, Ondernemersfonds Merwede-Transwijk & Co and the Municipality of Utrecht.

mobility against
loneliness
There are multiple types of loneliness, which can also be addressed in different ways. The consensus is that an approach works best when it targets one specific form*. In this case, we focus on prevention of loneliness through stimulation. The project encourages low-threshold contact with local residents and entrepreneurs in the neighbourhood. Mobility plays a major role.
In the words of Cees Verheul, one of the seniors involved, “I walk with a cane and that usually doesn't get me very far. But this bike makes us mobile again. It immediately makes your circle a whole lot bigger and that's really nice.

biking in the
neighbourhood
Under the larger umbrella of putting seniors back into the neighbourhood it is important to actually involve the neighbourhood. The riding duo will be given a road map, where various options for interaction are outlined. Various entrepreneurs are involved in the pilot, such as Café Keet and Cupp, where the necessary coffee and cake can be enjoyed.
This is interesting to us, as it allows different groups to mutually reinforce each other. In the follow-up steps, we will look at how we can improve the service, strengthen it and then expand it to other neighborhoods and cities throughout the Netherlands.
