Trust in the government

How do you experience your relationship with government?
Twelve times twelve meters of audio-theater.

Research findings are often difficult to communicate to outsiders. This is even more evident when reviewing trust, a deeply personal topic.

The Ministry of VWS’s (Health, Welfare and Sport) overarching team that worked on the topic of post-Corona trust was eager to share their findings. Even more so, it would be nice if other civil servants and policymakers could use their conclusions, to ultimately make better policy and laws.

Improving on the preliminary process, we designed an installation for this purpose, in which you can experience four scenarios involving different roles of government. In the four rooms you can hear audio fragments of citizens interacting with the government. In interaction with the audio, the people participate in that world and can actually immerse themselves in it.

The installation stood on the second floor of VWS for a month and a half. During that time, the team led groups of civil servants through the experience to engage in conversation.

from abstract to lifelike

Two contradictions emerged from the previous research regarding trust. In the possible futures, the size of government (big - small) and the direction of organized citizens (solidarity - autonomy) are the determined driving force.

The challenge was to properly reflect these abstract values in a lifelike and brief experience. We translated these scenarios  through the interaction with audio clips and the arrangement of the participants within the space.

four interactive installations

For example, in Personaliland (big government & autonomy), there was a vending machine; there, participants are served a government service package at the touch of a button. The package includes a headset and control panel to listen to audio clips from Personaliland, completely autonomously, reflecting the abstract themes.
A separate audio system is designed for each of the four scenarios, which participants interact with in groups or individually. Interestingly, the 3x3 meter spaces are not only beneficial to the focus of the participants, the blue PET felt also provides acoustic insulation.
